God’s Grace Is Available To You

And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. (John 1:16).

The story is told that Paul and Barnabas travelled to Paphos to preach the gospel. It so happened that they met a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar- Jesus, who was an attendant to the proconsul Sergius Paulus.

Sergius sent for Paul and Barnabas to hear the word of God, but the sorcerer opposed them. Paul who was filled with the Holy Spirit rebuked him and said, “You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.” As soon as Paul was finished speaking, Bar-Jesus became blind. Sergius was amazed and believed in the Lord’s teaching. (Acts 13:6-12).

Our obedience to God is integral to the accomplishment of his plan. The Holy Spirit prompted Paul to rebuke the sorcerer and he obeyed. This resulted in Sergius accepting salvation. When we obey the Holy Spirit, God is glorified. Interestingly, when we try to oppose God’s plan (Proverbs 21:30), he knows how to stop us, and use it for his glory. Regardless of the path we choose, we are assured that God’s grace is always available to us.

God demonstrated his grace while dealing with Bar-Jesus. Despite Bar-Jesus’ evil deeds and attempt to thwart God’s plan, he got a mild punishment. Scripture says, “…the Lord is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). Bar-Jesus experienced God’s power and love, and an opportunity to accept salvation.

Although you may not be a sorcerer, the Bible says you have sinned, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Still yet, God gives you grace daily while he patiently waits for you to repent. Will you take a moment and confess your sins? Will you obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit?

Heavenly Father, we praise you for your grace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
