God Works Through Your Concerns

Grace and peace be unto you.

The story is told that an angel of the Lord appeared unto Gideon and called him a mighty warrior. Gideon was not impressed because he and his fellow Israelites were being oppressed by the Midianites for seven years. Hence, he asked the question, “Where are all God’s wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?” He further stated that God had abandoned them and gave them to the Midianites. In response, the angel told him to “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?” (Judges 6:1-14).

Interestingly, Gideon raised the concern that God’s miracles and presence were absent among the Israelites. In response, God showed him that he was with the Israelites and was still performing miracles. And so, he instructed him to fight the Midianites. Gideon obeyed and was victorious. During the preparation and war, he experienced God’s wonders and presence; the things he was longing to see. Scripture says, “Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few” (Ecclesiastes 5:2).

Perhaps like Gideon, you have uttered your displeasure about God’s working in your life or in the world. He has heard you and will respond in his time. He will incorporate your concerns in his plan (Romans 8:28). As a result, do not be surprised when he gives you assignments based on your concerns. He knows that you are more likely to obey if the matter is of interest to you.

Heavenly Father, we praise you because you are All-Wise. Help us to submit our concerns to you and exercise self-control in all our ways. In Jesus’ name, amen.
