Grace and peace be unto you.
Have you ever been in the presence of a Christian who loves talking about himself and his possessions? How was the experience? Do you have a habit of boasting about yourself and your possessions? Scripture says, “What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?” (1 Corinthians 4:7).
The story is told that Merodach-Baladan, son of Baladan, king of Babylon sent letters and a gift to Hezekiah, for he had heard about his illness and recovery. Hezekiah received the envoys and showed them everything that was in the palace and storehouses. This included gold, silver, spices, and armory.
After the envoys left, the prophet Isaiah had a conversation with Hezekiah about their visit. Hezekiah mentioned that he showed them everything. God instructed Isaiah to tell him that everything in his house would be carried off to Babylon. (Isaiah 39:1-6).
Hezekiah had an opportunity to tell the envoys about God’s love but did not utilize it. Instead, he boasted about his possessions. God was not amused with his actions and administered judgement. God allows unbelievers in our lives for us to tell them about his goodness, with the hope that they will accept him as Lord. He loves when we boast about his kindness, justice, and righteousness (Jeremiah 9:23-24).
If you are in the habit of showcasing your possessions and talking about your achievements to feel good about yourself or seem important to others, God is displeased. He wants you to use your possessions and achievements to meet your needs and that of others. Hence, he is asking you to confess your sin, meditate on his word daily, obey his word, and talk to him frequently. When you do, you will boast in him (1 Corinthians 1:31).
Heavenly Father, thanks for guiding us along your path. Help us to boast about your love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
