The Job Is Not Yours

Grace and peace be unto you.

Have you had a failed initiative or goal that was not achieved? How do you explain the shortcoming? Occasionally, we overlook the fact that God determines the success of our plans. Scripture says, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21).

The story is told that after David became king of Israel and God removed his enemies, he was at peace. Hence, he shared his concern with the prophet Nathan, that God’s Ark was in a tent and he was living in a palace. Nathan encouraged him to do whatever he had in mind because God was with him. Interestingly, that night, God told Nathan to inform David that he would not build his temple, and he had chosen one of his sons to do it (2 Samuel 7:1-17).

David had all the resources to build the temple and was encouraged by Nathan to go ahead. Still yet, God decided that someone else would construct it. Sometimes, we are encouraged to do a task under the assumption that God is with us and we will succeed. But, although he is with us, he may not want us to do it. Hence, he is pleased when we ask him first (John 15:7).

Perhaps you have initiated a project by faith while hoping for God’s blessing. I implore you to stop and ask him if you should continue. It is possible that he wants someone else to complete it. David had the design for the temple which included buildings, storerooms, upper parts, inner rooms and the place of atonement. Nevertheless, after God spoke to him, he gave it to his son, Solomon (1 Chronicles 28:11).

Heavenly Father, we praise you for your greatness. Grant us the humility and willingness to do the job that you assign. In Jesus’ name, amen.
