How Much Do You Want?

Grace and peace be unto you.

The story is told that Jehoash king of Israel visited Elisha before he died. Elisha told him to get a bow and some arrows, open the east window and shoot. He obeyed and Elisha said, “The Lord’s arrow of victory, the arrow of victory over Aram! You will completely destroy the Arameans at Aphek.”

Then, Elisha instructed him to take the arrows and strike the ground. Jehoash struck the ground three times. Elisha was angry. He told Jehoash that he should have struck the ground five or six times and he would have destroyed the Arameans, but he would only defeat them three times (2 Kings 13:14-19).

Although Jehoash visited Elisha for advice and blessing to govern Israel, he was not receptive to God’s unlimited power. Hence, when given the opportunity, he settled for three victories against the Arameans. He knew that the arrow indicates victory so it is unclear why he did not strike the ground until he was exhausted.

Are you receptive to God’s unlimited power when you talk with him? He wants you to benefit from his lovingkindness, “So the Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the Lord is a faithful God…”

Heavenly Father, thanks for your grace and mercy. Help us to be prepared for your generosity when we speak with you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
