God Is Your Strong Tower; Trust Him

Grace and peace be unto you.

How comfortable are you around influential people? Do you have a desire to worship powerful people? God created us in his image for his glory. He is pleased when we understand that, “Our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die” (Psalm 103:15).

The story is told that David, empowered by God, used a slingshot and stone to kill Goliath, the Philistine’s champion. Goliath was over 9 feet tall. He wore bronze helmet, bronze leg armor, and carried bronze javelin. His armor bearer walked ahead of him carrying a shield. Goliath projected an image of confidence, authority, and an air of being indomitable (1 Samuel 17).

Consequently, he inspired confidence in the Philistines while causing the Israelites to shake with fear. Nonetheless, this fearless and arrogant giant was killed with a slingshot and stone. Scripture says, “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong” (1 Corinthians 1:27).

When Goliath died, the entire Philistine army tried to flee from the Israelites, but were unsuccessful. It is remarkable to observe that the 40, 000 Philistine’s army was useless without Goliath and the Israelites’ army was fearful while he was alive. Sadly, the Philistine’s hope was in one man while the Israelites’ fear stemmed from the same man.

God encourages us not to trust in men because they will fail us. They have many limitations and cannot meet our needs. Goliath could defend the Philistines from other humans but not from God. Hence, he failed them in this regard. God’s resources including power are inexhaustible, and he meets our needs at the right time. He implores us to fear him and not man, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28).

God entreats us not to worship or fear men regardless of how much power and authority they wield. Their influence is nothing compared to his. All power come from God, and he gives them to whomever he pleases (Daniel 4:17; 4:25). Likewise, he takes them away at his pleasure. He desires that we look beyond the “powerful image” and focus on him, the creator of the universe, author and finisher of our faith.

Heavenly Father, we praise you because you cannot be defeated. Help us to focus on your limitless power and faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, amen.
