How Receptive Are You To The Holy Spirit?

Grace and peace be unto you.

When was the last time the Holy Spirit spoke to you or you receive a word from the Lord? Scripture says, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you” (John 14:26).

The story is told that Ananias and Sapphira sold a plot of land and withheld a portion of the money. Then, they gave the rest to the apostles and told them that it was everything. However, the Holy Spirit revealed to Peter that they were lying. Peter subsequently informed them that they had lied to God and not to man (Acts 5:1-9).

Peter knew that Ananias and Sapphira lied because he was receptive to the Holy Spirit. Hence, he heard when the Holy Spirit spoke to him. Additionally, he knew the Holy Spirit’s voice. God promised to guide our activities (Psalm 32:8), and for this to occur, we must be willing and ready to hear from him. Sometimes, we do not hear him because we are busy. While at other times we do not expect him to speak, and so we are not in the frame of mind to listen.

Imagine for a moment that you have not spoken with your spouse or best friend in 72 hours. How would that lapse in communication affect your relationship? Similarly, a breakdown in communication with God negatively affects our relationship with him. We are doing his work and he desires to communicate with us. He wants to tell us how we are doing on his job and gives us tips for improvement if necessary.

God is asking us to be aware of his daily presence and expect him to speak with us. He is pleased when we study his word, worship, and bring our requests to him. Nonetheless, he cherishes the moments when we engage in conversation with him (Genesis 3:8).

Heavenly Father, thanks for sending your Holy Spirit to reside in us. Help us to be receptive to his voice. In Jesus’ name, amen.
