God’s Ways Are Higher Than Ours

Grace and peace be unto you.

It is interesting how sometimes we think we know what is right and are certain of the path that God wants us to travel. But then, he steps in, close the door and directs us on a different route. As a result, we are left temporarily dumbfounded, questioning our faith, and uncertain of the future.

The story is told that the early church was under persecution. As such, the saints were praying for the safety of the apostles. It so happened that while they were praying, King Herod had James the brother of John killed with the sword (Acts 12:1-2). The very action that the saints were praying against occurred. Scripture says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9).

God encourages us to pray for his will to be done (Matthew 6:10; 1 John 5:14). Nonetheless, sometimes we pray and expect our will to be done rather than his. The saints were disappointed when James was killed because they wanted his life to be spared, although God’s plan was for him to die. God is sovereign and does as he please; his plans cannot be thwarted (Psalm 115:3; Job 42:2). Hence, if he wanted James to live, he would not have been killed.

Why did God allow James to be killed? The Bible does not say, therefore, we do not know. But we are assured that from God’s perspective, it was for a good reason. Scripture says, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

God functions at a higher level than us. And so, we will not understand some of his actions. It is for this reason he asked us to commit our ways to him and trust him with the outcomes (Psalm 37:5). Many times, we will not know God’s answer concerning a matter until it is revealed. Consequently, it is best to submit our expectations to him and be receptive to his plan. By so doing, we shield ourselves from being discouraged with unexpected results.

Heavenly Father, we praise you because your ways are higher than ours. Help us to trust you in all our ways. In Jesus’s name, amen.
