Resting Peacefully Amidst Life’s Challenges

Grace and peace be unto you.

The story is told that Peter was imprisoned, and chained to two guards while sentries were guarding the prison door. His trial was scheduled for the following day. Nonetheless, he was asleep, unperturbed about the next day’s events.

But then, an angel of the Lord appeared in his cell. The angel struck him on his side and told him to get up, and immediately his chains fell off. The angel instructed him to get dressed and led him past the guards. When they reached the iron gate that leads to the city, it suddenly opened and they went through, went down one street, after which, the angel left him (Acts 12:5-17).

God promised to give his loved ones rest (Psalm 27:2), and Peter experienced this promise. He was aware of his pending trial, and yet, he was sleeping peacefully. In fact, he was in such deep sleep that the angel had to strike him to wake him. Peter trusted God with his life.

God tells us not to worry about anything but trust him in everything (Philippians 4:6; Proverbs 3:5). Peter knew that if he were executed, he would be home with the Lord. On the other hand, if his life was spared, it was another opportunity for him to strengthen his brethren, and share the gospel. In both instances, God would be glorified, hence he was unconcerned about his fate. As such, he slept peacefully, while resting in Jesus’ arms. The apostle Paul wrote, “For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better” (Philippians 1:21).

What are your concerns? Are they preventing you from having a good night’s rest? When you consider the likely outcomes of your concerns, will God be glorified? God is reminding you that he has a plan for your life and some of your fears are not in his plan. As a result, they will not materialize. He is asking you to trust him with all your concerns (1 Peter 5:7) so you can rest peacefully, while he takes care of them.

Heavenly Father, thanks for the privilege to rest in your arms during challenging times. In Jesus’ name, amen.
