God Speaks With Us During The Storm; What Does He Say?

Grace and peace be unto you.

Scripture says, “The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore” (Psalm 121:8). Imagine living your life with security detail, you have no need to fear because you are well protected. Similarly, God watches and protects us 24 hours every day. Hence we can conduct our daily activities confidently, and sleep peacefully at nights (Isaiah 26:3), even during the storm. Most importantly, he speaks with us during the storm.

The story is told that God instructed Jonah to preach to the Ninevites. But he did not want to go, and so he boarded a ship that was going to Tarshish. Tarshish is in opposite direction to Nineveh. Interestingly, God sent a great wind on the sea that caused a storm to form (Jonah 1:1-4). Sometimes, when there is a storm in our life, it is a sign that we are heading in the wrong direction, and God wants us to change direction.

Other times, God wants to increase our trust and strengthen our relationship with him. On one occasion, Jesus and his disciples decided to go to the other side, and so they got into a boat. A storm arose and the waves swept over the boat. The disciples feared that they would drown and woke Jesus, who was asleep in the stern. He got up and rebuked the waves, and there was calm. The disciples marveled at the scope of his power and authority (Matthew 8:23-27).

Still yet, there are instances when God allows storm in our life to save many lives. Paul and some other prisoners were being transported to Italy when they encountered a storm and the boat was severely damaged. The soldiers wanted to kill the prisoners to prevent them from escaping. However, the centurion convinced them to do otherwise, in order to save Paul’s life. Consequently, all the prisoners made it safely to shore (Acts 27).

God is asking you to face your storm with courage instead of fear, knowing that he is in control. He desires that you pray and listen for his response. Heavenly Father, thank you that you are always with us. Help us to communicate with you during our storms. In Jesus’ name, amen.
