The Power of Faith

Grace and peace be unto you.

“…Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon. So the sun stood still,
and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies”
(Joshua 10:12-13).

When we focus on the unpleasant happenings in the world, we lose sight of the powerful God who reigns and the power that we have through him. Nonetheless, when we study the Bible, we are reminded that, “God can do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20).

The story is told that Joshua and his men were fighting the five kings of the Amorites and it was getting dark. Hence, he commanded the sun and moon to stand still and they obeyed. Consequently, he received adequate light. A brief background to Joshua’s command is that God gave him permission to fight the kings and told him that he would be victorious. He believed God and confidently did his assignment. When we do God’s will and believe his word, we achieve the impossible.

Joshua needed light, a valuable resource to fulfill his assignment and by faith he received it from the sun and moon. God has provided all the resources we need to carry out our assignments but sometimes we need supernatural insight to see them. Who knew that Joshua could get light throughout the “night” by telling the moon and sun to stand still? Ask God to open your spiritual eyes and you will see all the available resources. Additionally, ask him to give you the wisdom to access them by faith.

The movements of the sun and moon are governed by God. Therefore, when Joshua commanded them to stand still, he was asking God to pause their movements. Interestingly, God gave him his desire.  When we do God’s will, he gives us everything we ask. Scripture says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4).

Heavenly Father, help us to do your will and access the needed resources by faith. In Jesus’ name, amen.
