Do Not Trust Your Eyes and Ears

Grace and peace be unto you.

Have you ever made a decision without adequate information? What was the outcome? Scripture says, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). One of Satan’s methods is to present information that seems accurate on the surface, nonetheless layers of deceit are hidden beneath. God knows that the information is inaccurate and waits for us to seek his advice.

The story is told that news of Joshua’s exploits spread throughout the region and the Gibeonites were afraid when they heard what Joshua did to Jericho and Ai. Therefore, they dressed in shabby clothes, worn out sandals, and carried dry and moldy bread, and visited Joshua.

They told him and the Israelites that they were from a distant land and heard what God did in Egypt, Jericho, and Ai. They asked Joshua to make a treaty with them. Joshua did not consult God and made a treaty to let them live. Three days after they made the treaty, the Israelites found out that the Gibeonites were their neighbors; living near them (Joshua 9:1-16).

Our eyes and ears receive limited information, and so we do not have the real picture of any given situation. Hence, the information is not reliable. It is prudent to collect additional information. God sees the real picture and is in the ideal position to advise us. Furthermore, he is always available. He was present when the Gibeonites lied to the Israelites but stayed silent. He watched Joshua made the treaty and uttered not a word. God does not intrude in our decisions; he patiently waits for an invitation.

Your past bad decisions cannot be undone but you will make decisions today and in the future. God is asking you not to depend on what you see and hear but consult him before you make them. Scripture says, “In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:6).

Heavenly Father, help us to seek your face before making decisions, in Jesus’ name, amen.
