Destroy The Devoted Items

Are you engaging in activities that bring you pleasure but displease the Lord? He desires that our activities honor him, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Colossians 3:17).

The story is told that Achan stole some items from Jericho that should have been destroyed. Consequently, the Israelites lost a battle. Joshua was unaware of Achan’s actions and sought the face of the Lord. The Lord informed him that Israel had stolen and lied. They took some of the devoted items and put them with their possessions, hence they were defeated by their enemies. He further added that they could not defeat their enemies until the items were destroyed. (Joshua 7:1-10).

You may have noticed that you are being defeated by your enemies. Your enemies are yourself, the world, and Satan. God promised that no weapon formed against you will prosper and you will refute every tongue that accuses you (Isaiah 54:17). Therefore, if you are not having victory over your enemies, perhaps you have “devoted items” that should be destroyed. For example, unhealthy desires. Scripture says, “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry” (Colossians 3:5).

Joshua’s victory was contingent on obedience to God. Similarly, your victory is dependent on obedience to God. He is asking you to repent and turn from your evil ways. When you do, you will be victorious over your enemies.

Heavenly Father, thanks for your grace and mercy. Help us to destroy the devoted items. In Jesus’ name, amen.
