God Is Speaking; Are You Listening?

Grace and peace be unto you.

When was the last time you heard God’s voice or had an encounter with him? How did you respond? The story is told that God instructed Elijah to stand on the mountain for he was about to pass. A great and powerful wind came, but the Lord was not in it. After the wind, there was an earthquake and a fire, but the Lord was in neither of them. After the fire, there was a gentle whisper, and Elijah knew that was the Lord (1 Kings 19:11-13).

Elijah believed God’s Word and was therefore prepared to have an encounter with him. He removed all distractions and was focused on experiencing God’s presence. God oftentimes speak very softly and if we do not listen keenly, we will miss his voice. Scripture says, “For God speaks again and again, though people do not recognize it” (Job 33:14). Elijah heard the whisper because he was anticipating it.

Sometimes, we do not hear God’s voice or sense his presence because we do not believe his Word, that is, we are not convinced that he speaks to us. Other times, we are too busy with the cares of the world. This may include preoccupation with social media or worrying about the past, present, and future. As such, we do not make the time to quiet our mind and spirit to hear from the Lord.

God desires to have two-way communication with you. Scripture says, “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known” (Jeremiah 33:3). God also wants you to be aware of his presence. These two expectations are not onerous. They can be achieved by doing the following:

1. Diligently study God’s Word.

2. Believe God’s Word.

3. Practice using relaxation techniques to help you focus.

4. Pray and praise frequently.

Heavenly Father, please help us to believe your Word, and quiet our mind so we can hear from you. Teach us how to sense your presence. In Jesus’s Name, Amen.
