“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you” (John 15:12).
Have you showed God recently that you love him? When was the last time you give love to yourself and others? Well, you are alive today therefore you have another opportunity to show more love to God, yourself, and others. Scripture says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27).
The story is told that the Corinthians valued spiritual gifts above love. Consequently, the apostle Paul told them that the gifts were meaningless without love and it is the greatest of all virtues. Hence, they should desire to increase their love (1 Corinthians 13). God desires that love is the driving force behind our actions and evident in our daily life. The apostle James wrote, “If one of you says to them, Go in peace; keep warm and well fed, but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?” (James 2:16).
What is love? “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).
Perhaps your love is buried deep in your heart because of exposure to unpleasant circumstances. For example, you might have endured abuse, oppression, or injustice which has left you traumatized and distrustful of humanity. As a result, you have built a wall around your heart and are unkind to others. Even so, God is asking you to give him your problems and accept his love. His love will wipe away your pain and negative thoughts, and replace them with his lovingkindness (Matthew 11:28-30).
When you fully embrace God’s love, your thoughts and actions reflect his, and your desire is to please him. Consequently, you treat yourself and others in a loving manner. There are many ways you can show more love, but the three main ones are:
1. Obey God’s Commandments.
2. Be kind to yourself in thoughts, words, and deeds.
3. Be kind to others in thoughts, words, and deeds.
Heavenly Father, please help us to love you, ourselves, and others more each day. In Jesus’s Name, Amen.
