Grace and peace be unto you.
A Word of Encouragement…
Quietness refers to the absence of noise, for example, when you tune out external and internal noise. Rest is defined as relaxation of the mind and body.
The Apostle Matthew wrote that Jesus fasted 40 days and 40 nights and was very hungry. The devil recognized his carnal weakness and tempted him three times. Nonetheless, he did not yield to the temptations and the devil left him. Not long afterwards, angels came and attended to him (Matthew 4:1-11).
During the first temptation, Satan said to Jesus, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus told him that, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:3-4). The second time the devil took him to Jerusalem and had him stand at the highest point of the temple. Then he told him to throw himself down and angels will rescue him. But Jesus said to him, “It is also written: Do not put the Lord your God to the test” (Matthew 4:5-7). The third time Satan took Jesus to a high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and promised to give them to him if he would bow down and worship him. However, Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only” (Matthew 4:8-10).
During Jesus’s fast, he abstained from food, prayed, worshipped, and meditated on God’s Word. At the end of his fast he was physically weak but spiritually strong, hence he was able to overcome the temptations. Jesus not only responded to Satan using the Word of God but he was confident and persistent. The Bible says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).
Spiritual strength is obtained from quietness and rest. When your body is in a state of quietness and rest, you can hear God’s voice clearly, feel his presence, and experience his power. As such, you are prepared to effectively deal with adversities and daily activities. You might have considered the question, how do I find quietness and rest? You experience them through reading and meditating on God’s Word, fasting, worshipping God, and praying. The Bible says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:29).
